The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a La Nina watch for Australia just weeks after announcing the end of its twin weather event El Nino.

There are early signs that a La Nina weather event may form in the Pacific Ocean later this year, Australia's weather bureau said on Tuesday. A La Nina would have significant consequences for global agriculture because it typically brings wetter weather to eastern Australia and southeast Asia and drier conditions to the Americas.

After enduring weeks of rain, Aussies could be faced with months more later this year after the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issued a La Niña watch for Australia.

The Bureau of Meteorology is on La Niña watch just a month after the summer's El Niño ended. The Bureau declared the southern oscillation index (SOI) to have returned to neutral in mid-April, tying off the El Niño that developed over summer.

There is a 50 per cent chance Australia is going to experience a La Nina event, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
