Japan's farm ministry said on Friday that an animal health and quarantine agreement with China had come into force, paving the way towards the resumption of Japanese beef exports to China that had been halted in 2001.

According to a Financial Times (FT) report, the Pentagon is pressing Japan and Australia to make clear what role they would play if the US and China go into conflict over China's Taiwan island, which has frustrated the two American allies.
