On Tuesday, May 6, Rudolf Peters, from the town of Haltern am See in western Germany, was hiking on the Windows Loop trail when he fell, according to the National Park Service.

Police say they responded to a call of two hikers who had become separated and lost around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. One of the hikers was located and rescued by helicopter, while the other was found unresponsive,
