A federal judge says Tennessee’s first-in-the-nation law designed to place strict limits on drag shows is unconstitutional

The law would have banned adult cabaret performances from public property or anywhere minors might be present.

The law, one of the first aimed at curbing drag performances in front of children, had been on hold for nearly two months as the legal battle went on.

Tennessee’s Republican governor, Bill Lee, in February had signed the bill passed by the state’s assembly that aimed to restrict drag performances.

A federal judge tossed out Tennessee’s controversial “anti-drag” law just after midnight Friday. The law would have restricted drag performances in the state. Judge Thomas Parker ruled the law unconstitutional after closing arguments in hearings about the state’s recent passage of the bill concluded in May.
