Meta said it was lifting restrictions placed on the Facebook and Instagram accounts of former President Donald Trump 17 months ago, ahead of the Republican National Convention.

Meta announced plans to remove its January 6-era restrictions from Donald Trump's accounts. Trump had been banned and then reinstated on Meta's Facebook and Instagram as well as X and YouTube.

Trump’s Meta accounts were suspended following the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, given his praise for those who engaged in violence. Those accounts were later reinstated.

This included the company’s decision to ban Trump’s social media accounts following the January 6 insurrection. In the last year, Meta has made a concerted effort to appease Republicans.

Meta also said that the restrictions on Mr. Trump’s account in 2016 were a result of “extraordinary circumstances.” Mr. Zuckerberg has flip-flopped on political content as well.
