A group of 13 conservative U.S. federal judges said on Monday that they would not hire law students or undergraduates from Columbia University in response to its handling of pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

Columbia University is canceling its large university-wide commencement ceremony amid ongoing pro-Palestinian protests but will hold smaller school-based ceremonies this week and next, the university announced Monday.

Pro-Palestinian protests sprouted on campus April 17 when students pitched about 50 tents while demanding a cease-fire in Gaza and insisting the university divest from companies that they say could be profiting from the war.

Columbia canceled its main commencement ceremony, the University of Mississippi launched a student conduct investigation and Princeton students announced a hunger strike.

The protest movement connected to the Israel-Hamas war began nearly three weeks ago at the Ivy League university in New York City. It has since swept college campuses nationwide, with more than 2,500 people arrested.

Officials announced Monday that they will focus on Class Day and school-level events instead of the main ceremony planned for May 15, following the arrest and suspension of pro-Palestinian protesters.

Columbia University has canceled its main commencement ceremony following weeks of protests over the Israel-Hamas war, officials said Monday.
