When Rogelio Villarreal bought rose-gold earrings for a price that the luxury retailer said was a mistake, he looked to a Mexican consumer protection law. He later said the company delivered the earrings.

Rogelio Villarreal, a citizen of Mexico, bought Cartier earrings costing nearly $14,000 for under $14 after a pricing error on the jeweler's website.

“I have the worst luck in the world and I’ve never made any money, and what I have is because I bought it,” Villarreal wrote in his social media accounts. But now, he was been able to buy two $14,000 sets of earrings for only about $28. He says he gave one of them to his mother.

The words Cartier and deal are rarely said in the same breath. But the legendary French jeweler has been forced to extend an enormous discount to a Mexican man after he claimed an error allowed him to buy two pairs of earrings for $28 that were supposed to sell for nearly $28,

Cartier ultimately agreed to let the buyer keep the earrings he had purchased at an inadvertent discount. Not everyone supports the outcome.

Cartier apparently had made a mistake and listed gold-and-diamond earrings for 237 pesos ($14), instead of the correct price, 237,000 pesos ($14,000). Villarreal ordered two sets.
