The United Nations and partners continue to support authorities across East Africa as the region braces for more of the heavy rains and severe flooding that have reportedly killed upwards of 350 people since March.

Kenyan President William Ruto addressed the nation, outlining a series of measures to deal with the emergency, including evacuations and urgent health provisions.

Coastal regions of Kenya and Tanzania have been buffeted by heavy rains and high winds from Tropical Cyclone Hidaya.

At least 200 people were killed and dozens more were injured across East Africa in recent days, officials and aid groups said, as torrential rains, floods and landslides pummeled towns and cities in a region already grappling with the devastating effects of the climate change crisis.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is particularly concerned about thousands of refugees and other displaced people being forced to escape once again for their lives after their homes were washed away.

Weeks of heavy rains have left a trail of death and destruction across East Africa, with Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi the worst hit.
