Republican demands for boosted border security have thrown a major wrench in a much-needed aid package to help Ukraine

Senate Republicans Dec. 6 blocked an emergency spending bill to provide billions of dollars in wartime aid to Ukraine and Israel while calling for strict new policies at the U.S.-Mexico border opposed by some Catholic immigration advocates.

Most of those hard right Republicans, who say we must have border [reform], don’t want to vote for aid for Ukraine in any case,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Tuesday.

Texas Republicans refuse to back continued aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan without a major hardening of border security policy.

The Senate voted to block a bill Wednesday that would have provided aid to Ukraine as Republicans have clamored for stricter border security measures.

Republicans are doubling down on their efforts to exact border policy changes in exchange for their support for Ukraine aid.
