With one-fifth of states seeing active measles outbreaks, the U.S. is nearing 900 cases, according to figures posted Friday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health experts fear the virus will take hold in other U.S. communities with low vaccination rates and that the spread could stretch on for a year.

The Texas Department of State Health Services has confirmed 22 more cases of measles since the last update on Tuesday. This brings the West Texas outbreak to 646 cases since it began in late January.

Texas health officials reported 22 new cases of measles on Friday, raising the total seen during the outbreak to 646.

The measles outbreak that began in West Texas now totals 725 cases across three states. Less than 10 cases in Texas are considered actively infectious.
