A measles outbreak in Texas continues to grow and cases are popping up all over the the U.S. The vaccination rate in South Carolina also puts kids at risk.

Last week, a woman infected with measles gave birth at University Medical Center Children’s Hospital in Lubbock, Texas, possibly exposing newborns and their families to the highly infectious virus causing a large outbreak in West Texas and neighboring states.

Outbreaks of once-eradicated diseases, like measles, are becoming more common and severe as childhood vaccination rates decline.

Measles cases have surpassed last year’s total less than three months into the year, as the outbreak in West Texas continues to spread.

Half of the newly reported cases are in Gaines County, about 80 miles southwest of Lubbock, which has been the epicenter of the outbreak. The Texas Department of State Health Services has confirmed 259 cases of measles since late January.

Texas is now reporting 223 measles cases in the outbreak that began in Gaines County. There are dozens more cases in New Mexico, too.

A measles outbreak in West Texas has sickened at least 198 people, with 23 patients hospitalized and one dead.

As the outbreak rages, unproven remedies like cod liver oil are being distributed free by some doctors. Families are lining up for them.
