Frenk, the first Latino to ever lead the Westwood university, took over as UCLA chancellor at the beginning of January, replacing Gene Block, who stepped down on July 31 of last year.

Public health scholar Julio Frenk, the first Latino chancellor at UCLA, previously served at Harvard and the University of Miami. He was Mexico’s federal health secretary from 2000 to 2006.

Frenk became UCLA’s first Latino chancellor Jan. 1., He was president of the University of Miami from 2015 to 2024 and dean of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health from 2009 to 2015.
