Wentworth is one of the best of the deciduous Viburnum. It has masses of flat flower heads in May, which turn into the brightest red berries you have ever seen. Beneficial pollinators will cover this shrub while in bloom. Birds and other small animals love to feast on the berries from late summer all of the way into the winter. The fall foliage is a vibrant mix of red shades. So many good things from just one shrub.Viburnum are great for adding to a naturalized area or including in a Cottage Garden plan. The vertical growth and dense foliage makes for a nice informal hedge. Wentworth Viburnum has both male and female flowers on one plant, making it self fertile. No need to have multiple shrubs planted together, although yields of the berries may be higher when planted with a companion.Wentworth Viburnum CareWentworth prefers moist, well drained soils. It is not choosy about light conditions. Full sun to part shade will help this shrub bloom profusely. Mulching in the fall will help to improve soils to retain more moisture over time. Wentworth Viburnum is very tolerant of pollution and does wonderfully in urban gardens. Pruning should only be done after the blooming has ended. Removing all of the blooms will also remove potential berries. Ideally a light pruning of dead, dying, diseased and diagonal branches is done early in the spring to remove any winter damage. Any sucker stems that grow up are easily removed to keep the shrub inside its allotted area.Fertilizing can also be done in the early spring.
