USDA Hardiness Zones 5-9Height 6-8 Feet TallSpread 3-4 Feet WidePruning Group 3The Happy Jack Purple Clematis is a new and improved version of the popular 'Jackmanii' clematis. The flowering vine has velvety purple flowers with bright yellow stamens just like the old version, however this plant has larger and brighter colored flowers. The flowers can grow up to be 5 inches wide! These will typically grow up to 8 feet tall, however some clematis have been known to grow as tall as 20 feet!Grow these on a trellis, over a garden arch, or on the side of a building. The beautiful vines can grow up just about anything, but be sure to provide SOMETHING to support the vines and allow them to climb upwards. These are very low maintenance once established. The plant is deciduous which means the leaves fall off in the winter. The foliage is dark green when leaves are present. This plant was also the winner of a Green Thumb award from the Direct Gardening Association.Happy Jack Clematis CarePrune Happy Jack Clematis in the spring, because this is a group 3 clematis. We recommend trimming back to 2 feet tall. Apply a slow/controlled release fertilizer afterwards. The plant can grow in partial sun to full sun. It is best to have the base in partial sunlight to protect the base, and have the rest of the plant receive as much sunlight as possible for the best bloom performance. Apply a layer of mulch at the base of the plant to help retain moisture and protect the roots in harsh weather conditions.Happy Jack Clematis SpacingThese plants can grow to be very large. So we do not recommend growing them closer than 4 feet apart, even better if you plant them 6 feet apart. You may also grow these in containers, but be sure to provide a small trellis or some sort of structure for the vine to grow upwards on.Happy Jack Purple Clematis Vine Plant FactsUSDA Hardiness Zones: 5-9Flower Color(s): PurpleBloom Period: SummerFoliage Color(s): GreenLight Exposure: Partial Sun to Full SunHeight Class: TallHeight: 6-8 FeetSpread: 3-4 FeetSpacing: 4-5 FeetHabit: ClimbingWatering: AverageDrought Tolerant: NoResists: n/aAttracts: n/aFeatures: Long BloomingScientific Name: Happy Jack® Purple Clematis x 'Zojapur' USPP 20,343Common Name: Happy Jack® Purple Clematis VineOther Name(s): n/aBrand: Proven Winners ColorChoice | Perennials > Clematis > Group 3 Clematis Proven Winners CLEHJ1PW
