Pollinators-Friendly. Plant it and you will see beneficial pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, and birds flying happily round the beautiful blooms. Feature. 'Princess Victoria Louise' is a feast for the eyes with its large, crepe papery, cup-shaped, salmon-pink flowers with a dark purple eye and black splotches at their base. USDA Hardiness Zone. Poppy is a very beautiful flower grown in 2-9 (USDA). Sow. Sow seeds in rows 12 to 24 inches apart and cover with 1/8 inch of soil in early Autumn or Spring. Keep the soil moist at 55 - 60 degrees F. Germination may take place in 14 to 30 days. Sun. Grow in deep, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Papaver somniferum is the species of plant from which poppy seeds are derived and is also a valuable ornamental plant, grown in gardens. Its native range is probably the eastern Mediterranean. For Instructions On How To Grow Poppy TIME-Start in March or April in a cold frame or pot indoors. Germination is very slow, so please be patient. Transplant 6-8 weeks after sowing. Keep the soil moist, but do not stand in water. GETTING STARTED-Meconopsis does not respond well to transplanting and germination itself can be tricky in the best of circumstances. It is always best to start from fresh seed. Strategy 1: Sow the seeds on the surface of a seed starting mixture that has been pre-moistened and placed in coconut or peat pots. Place them under bright lights at 12-15°C (54-59°F) and water only from below. Do not allow the soil to flood. Sowing seeds in peat or coco pots may reduce transplant shock. After the second pair of true leaves has grown, transplant outdoors in a cool, moist location. Strategy 2: Vernalize the seeds. Sow them in thin layers on the surface of sandy compost or perlite in trays. Mist the trays before wrapping them in plastic and inserting them in the refrigerator for 3 weeks. Then take the trays out and try to keep them at 12-15°C (54-59°F) under a bright light. Allow the second pair of leaves to emerge, then gently transplant them into 10 cm (4 in.) pots in well-drained soil. Plant the plants until August before transplanting them to their permanent location. They should bloom the following year.
