The North Star Cherry Tree (Prunus X 'North Star') is one such spring bloomer with a twist: the large, bright red cherries it produces in the late spring are juicy, tart, and perfect for jams and pies. This dwarf tree reaches 6-9 feet tall and 8-10 feet wide, making it a manageable size for both ornamental uses and for harvesting its high yield of spring fruits. Other benefits of the North Star Cherry Tree include disease resistance and self-pollination, making it an easier fruit tree to grow. Considered one of the hardiest cherry trees, the North Star can produce cherries in its first year and may provide up to 30 quarts of cherries at maturity. This tree grows with smooth gray bark and deep green leaves, producing clusters of dainty white blooms in the spring. North Star Cherry Tree CareTo plant the North Star Cherry Tree, dig a hole that is at least twice the width and as deep as the root ball. The North Star grows best in moist, well-draining soil and in a spot with full sun. Cherry trees are not tolerant of soggy soil, so amend the soil during planting as needed. Apply a slow-release fertilizer that is higher in phosphorus in the spring to aid in flower and fruit production. Water the North Star regularly and deeply, especially in its first year.
