The 'Luckenbooth' gets it's name from the locked booths that sold these iconic brooches along the Royal Mile near St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland. These brooches were part of the historical crown and heart motif which also birthed the claddagh ring design. They were usually given as a love token or a betrothal gift, the two hearts intertwining symbolized a lasting union. I was thrilled when I came across this fabulous large pair on my last trip to London, and was even more happier when I saw the early hallmark, dating this wonderful piece to the early years of the Victorian era. These wonderful, early antique silver Luckenbooth brooches were handcrafted in Scotland, in about 1780. They bear minimalistic engraving overtop overlapping hearts topped with a crown. The brooches are hand crafted and so while I suspect they are a matched pair, they are very slightly different in size. One of the brooches measures 72 mm high and 52.2 mm across, the other measure 68.8 mm top to bottom and 51 mm across at the widest point, together they weigh 55.4 grams. These early beauties are unmarked and have been tested as silver. These enduring silver tokens of romance were doubtlessly made as a wedding pair and they would make an excellent gift for a bride and groom. I offer a 3-5 payment layaway on most items purchased for full retail price, please inquire if you are interested in setting up a layaway. Items ship when payment is complete and items purchased or payments made on layaway are eligible for store credit only. I always want you to be happy with every aspect of your purchase. If you are not completely satisfied for any reason simply let me know and we'll work together to get the item returned for a full refund. I guarantee that my pictures and descriptions are as accurate as possible. My goal is to exceed your best expectations! ITEM ID: BHA23436VA
